Coda Notes: a Safari Extension

So, just a few moments ago, Apple introduced Safari 5, the next major version of our favorite web browser. And with Safari 5? Safari Extensions, a new way for developers to add new functionality to Safari.

And, also a few moments ago, we have our very first crack at a Safari extension! What is it?

Well, the pitch goes something like this: we do a pretty good job making life easier for people who hand-code websites using Coda, our all-in-one web development environment. But is there anything we can do to make life better for the client? The person who’s paying the bills, or the marketing person, or the guy or girl who’s likely to call you and say, “Hey, can you make that one thing bigger, move that one thing and do that thing? By tomorrow?” Nobody knows what that means. And that’s something we thought we could improve.

Introducing Coda Notes, our Safari Extension for website annotation, and a fun little project.

Coda Notes

When you install Coda Notes, you’ll get a new button in your toolbar. Click it to see all our annotation tools, built right into Safari. Draw some notes on your favorite website. Communicate changes, ideas, concepts, or problems. Then, when you’re done, hit the Send Notes button and the whole page flips over as a postcard.

Enter your comments, e-mail addresses, hit the nice looking “Send Notes” button, and that’s it! The developer gets an e-mail with your screenshot and notes, instantly. In short, with Coda Notes, you can communicate in seconds what would have been much harder to communicate before, all without ever leaving Safari.

And let’s not forget cool thing #2: we literally added a new feature to Safari. In a standards-based, clean way. This, my friends, is awesome.

(Tech Note: The Coda Notes extension is built entirely in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS; the extension bar is basically an HTML file, and the page-flip effect is accomplished using a CSS transform. We draw on a transparent canvas element injected over the target page. Live text editing is done by setting the contentEditable attribute on the body of the page, thus turning Safari into an editor, similar to how Apple Mail works!)

When will this be available?

Update: Coda Notes is now available for download!

We’re feeling it out. It’s certainly “quick and dirty” in its current form, and Coda Notes was a bit of an experiment for us — made in only 4 days! But when Safari Extensions are more available to the public, it’s likely you’ll see Coda Notes too. Keep an eye on this blog and/or follow us on Twitter!

Thanks to Apple for letting us play with Safari Extensions, and thanks to Neven and Garrett for such great quick work on this project. If you have ideas for Coda Notes, let us know!

This is amazing. Minor detail: Safari 5 isn’t out yet.

That was a sick demo. Great job guys.

That is awesome. Thanks guys!

6/7/2010 4:44 PM

That’s all well and good, but how many clients use Safari, let alone Safari 5? :P

In all serious though, nice job guys, looking forward to using it!

Oh yes :) Excellent excellent.

Beautiful blue “Send Notes” button there. Gorgeous.

Johan Kool

6/7/2010 4:46 PM

Looks absolutely awesome!

Wow, this looks really great guys. And very slick as usual. This will definitely be a great way to quickly get proper feedback on projects, instead of reading through tons of text trying to figure out what the client is actually talking about.

Btw, will there be a video? http://twitter.com/gruber/status/15663884644

Awesomeness. But, yeah when do we get Safari 5?

Nice stuff! Look forward to trying it out 8)

Grab Safari 5 here: http://www.apple.com/safari/

Safari 5.0 now available via software update.

P.S Love the extension team Panic. :)

Meh… Oh, wait, strike that. Awesome. I mean, seriously, this is such a cool idea. Just out of curiosity, what gets sent to the recipient? Just an overlay (or the HTML/JS to recreate it), or is it a screenshot? At any rate, I’m really impressed with the cleverness of the feature, as well as the turnaround to create something like this. A couple of years ago, this would have been science fiction.

Zak Auerbach

6/7/2010 4:52 PM

Really awesome! I can’t wait for this to be out because I can see a million times when I’d use this when working with my team!

Great stuff, “guy-who-acknowledged-guy-who-applauded.”

6/7/2010 4:54 PM

Safari 5 is already available (well, at least for me it is!), check Software Update under the Apple menu.

Mark Suman

6/7/2010 4:55 PM

So I had this idea like two years ago. However, Panic has done a much better job at building than I would have. ;-)

Mark Suman

6/7/2010 4:55 PM

can’t wait to try it out.

Joseph Rosario

6/7/2010 5:03 PM

Looks great! Definitely excited about what’s to come with Safari 5 extensions.

Great job! If anyone could implement and demo a cool new thing like this, I knew it would be you!

Kailey Lampert

6/7/2010 5:06 PM

I’ve got Safari 5 now, but I don’t wanna wait for Coda Notes… it sounds awesome! (I guess I’ll wait, though, if I have to…)

hey, panic guys, when are we gonna see the panic logo draw using a canvas element??

Great demo. You decided to capture the result as a screen cap. Is there any reason that the markup couldn’t be captured as a datapoint that could then be sent up to a webservice for data collection purposes? Thanks for this work!

Robin Raszka

6/7/2010 5:15 PM

Awesome job! Can’t wait to try it out!

6/7/2010 5:16 PM

Very cool, but that name is such a TEASE :) (it really has nothing to do with Coda…)

Drew Bell

6/7/2010 5:30 PM

This is also completely awesome for those of us who teach web design. A built-in feedback system on a live site?! Not having to work Flickr screenshots into the middle of the process? MASSIVELY GREAT. Thanks, folks.

Christopher Beckwith

6/7/2010 5:38 PM

That’s fantastic. Show’s a lot about your company that Apple would entrust you with the news ahead of time.

Genius. It sucks that you’re not going to have a chance at an ADA this year. The innovations coming out of Panic are wonderful. Keep up the good work.

Jessi Hance

6/7/2010 6:01 PM

Woohoo! I want this for me and all my workmates! I bet we are going to make good use of it!

This is awesome! When can we try this out!?

This really looks great! I think one reason the markup is captured as a screenshot is because depending on plugins, zoom level, location, etc. it may appear differently on the client’s computer. That’s the way I see it at least. So when can we download it? :)

Jordan Borth

6/7/2010 6:16 PM

Awesome! So excited!

Hot damn. I love you, panic. I trust you’ll send a nice email update to everyone when it’s ready?? Please?

RichardM

6/7/2010 6:26 PM

FEATURE REQ: User configurable host for the notes (enter server details). The emails then link to the hosted notes. Thanks for listening!

As usual you people are awesome. Great work! Can’t wait to use CodaNotes.

Looking good. Safari extensions will add much more possibilities to Safari.
Is ‘Coda Notes’ going to be the first Safari Extension — http://www.the-constant.com/2010/06/safari-5-released-—-first-extension/ ?

Looking forward to it.

Probably one of the best uses of extensions in a web browser ever, great job!

That is awesome. Thanks guys!

6/7/2010 7:07 PM

Stoked! I’m ready to use it. Nice work!

6/7/2010 7:20 PM

Probably one of the best ideas for an extension I’ve ever come across. Great for web designers.

Thanks Guys

Wow, this looks awesome. Now the challenge that remains is getting those at work who review our website updates to use Safari 5, rather than IE (we’re a Windows company) and stop wasting paper! :-)
Shame we have to wait ’til end of summer for the Extensions Site to be available.

How about a way for the web developer to give a default email? That would make it a lot more streamlined.

Here’s an idea, save the notes in local storage to keep for ourselves and have the ability to sync when there’s an internet connection. For local development, allow relative paths to remap to other domains or other development machines. :)

Super-groovy! This will save me so much time over the course of a year…

Realtime collab?

This is awesome. I can think of tons of use in education for this.. .tons…

6/7/2010 10:08 PM

That looks great! Please do release it ASAP, might convince my manager to ditch Chrome. ;)

Matt @ DVQ

6/7/2010 10:18 PM

Bravo! Looks pretty cool :)

This is great! Please create it for FireFox also and Chrome as a lot of mac users use Chrome and Firefox and would love to use this all the time.

*quiet gasp*

What a handsome and practical extension! Now, let me wipe the dribble from my chin.

Quick and dirty? I don’t care. GIMME GIMME GIMME!!! :)

Yes please!

I’m a webmaster working remotely for a company in another state. The company runs an all mac platform and while we vid chat several times a day, this tool would be AWESOME for those quick fixes the guys at corporate come up with. Release this and we’ll implement it right now. I’m waiting!

Wow.. gimme!
Every time I read your blog or use your producs, I’m thinking of moving to CA and begging for a job*, because it seems that working at Panic would be a dream come true :D

* or just stalking, that would also work

Nice extension Panic, we released an extension for Safari today as well –

6/8/2010 1:40 AM

Truly awesome… You guys are in the top echelon of your trade – good job all round

Fantastic. This seems to be the Apple (and Apple developer) way. Take an idea that people have been toying with for a little while (extensions) and turn it into an OMFG THAT IS AWESOME thing. There’s just something inspirational about the Mac platform. Well done.

Iain Anderson

6/8/2010 2:19 AM

This is going to be the best tool for making fun of bad sites. I’m looking forward to the equivalent of photoshopdisasters.blogspot.com for websites, enabled entirely through this extension, with extra snark.

I want Coda to be integrated with Safari’s Web Inspector. :)

Simon Norris

6/8/2010 2:36 AM

Can you to a windows version too? (Sorry, sorry, sorry but we have a mix of users and this tool looks like just the job to get feedback to us web monkeys).

Carlitos

6/8/2010 2:41 AM

Please, guys, stop hogging all the awesome. Leave some for the rest of us!

Rogelio Gudino

6/8/2010 2:47 AM

Amazing! congratz Coda :D

6/8/2010 2:54 AM

Would love to see an iOS app for this also. All of my clients have an iPhone or iPad, and for many of them this would be the only Web development tool they ever need.

Great stuff man, can’t wait to take it for a spin.

Pattulus

6/8/2010 3:18 AM

Great stuff,

BUT sadly most my clients use Firefox… an extension for that windy forrest creature would be great, too.

Marc Bizer

6/8/2010 3:59 AM

Where is the *&^*( link for downloading coda notes?

Andy buckram

6/8/2010 4:40 AM

Thank goodness Apple didn’t buy Panic to get Audion. After all, C&G disappeared after it happenned to them and while I don’t miss Conflict Catcher, et al, I definitely don’t want to live in a world without Panicware! Keep being amazing, guys!

Michael Quinn

6/8/2010 4:40 AM

Extensions aren’t out yet, but Transmit 4 is.

How about fixing up the bug that lets you import Transmit 4 sites into Coda?

Thx guys, just the thing we all need. I’ll stay on this page until it is released. If you let me. I promise to be nice and stay in my corner.

Andrew Jones

6/8/2010 4:46 AM

Hey, that’s great. Say, when do you think we’ll ever see a new version of Coda itself? Just sayin’.

Pat Gudridge

6/8/2010 5:08 AM

I have no technical competence at all — pure user. Will CodaNotes work with Safari reproductions of pdf pages — like, say, US Supreme Court opinions? With newspaper webpages? Etc. If so, your extension may be hugely useful for people like me, who aren’t interested in web page design but are interested in routinely marking up pages and sending notes to each other about what we read.

Many thanks……

how does it handle email? does it send notes through your smtp servers, or is that user configurable?

This may be a sneak peek at more features for Coda 2.0? (can’t wait for that)

This extension will be very useful. It’s about time Safari was this open to write extensions for.

Cabel, et al,

There already was a solution for this, and I have to say a much worse one at that, but it is far more popular; far more accepted and far less work for the client.

http://www.makemylogobiggercream.com/

No, I have nothing to do with this site, but figured I would share for a little Tuesday morning fun!

Ruben Rojas

6/8/2010 6:01 AM

This is amazing!!! I like to use for projects.

In a similar vein: last year, we developed a great little JS component for developers to share notes on sites called Web Stickies. Installation is sort of like adding Google Analytics, just sprinkle a magic script tag and put an HTML file in your document root. For those interested in such a thing, it is available over here:

http://websticki.es/

Geoff Barnes

6/8/2010 7:03 AM

Hey, any chance you could release it this morning? I could really – like REALLY – use it this morning. And many mornings after this one, I imagine. God, I miss Third Voice.

Great work, guys. Hugs & high fives.

Simon Norris:

Since Safari Extensions are entirely HTML/CSS/JS-based, I don’t see why this wouldn’t work on Safari in Windows as well!

Gil Creque

6/8/2010 7:47 AM

Would you consider porting it to Firefox or Chrome?

Tim Kaiser

6/8/2010 7:59 AM

Will be great for annotating Google/Mapquest maps and sending them off and for people
“fixing” my web pages.

Terrific work! I love Coda for Mac & it just goes to show that great development comes from people who are on top of things and quick to try new things. Way to go!

Eric Ohlsen

6/8/2010 9:10 AM

I’m not a developer at all, but I see so many uses for this as a training tool for how to access and use websites. I am anxiously waiting for a release version!

This looks great! – Please let me know when it’s available to download!

Michael Wesley Stratton

6/8/2010 10:03 AM

This looks absolutely awesome. I really hope you guys release it soon, even if it’s a “quick and dirty” release then give us a much more finalized package in the future.

This is so outstanding I’m going to start highly recommending my clients to use Safari 5 and Coda Notes at least for the duration of the project. It’s an outstanding way for them to tell you exactly what they want changed and where.

Keep up the phenomenal work Panic! I’m sure you will, you haven’t let us down yet!

Nice implementation. This would be far more convenient than Skitch. A “Copy URL” button possibly next to the “Send Notes” button would be super handy.

Oh… Fantastic!

Joshua McCowen

6/8/2010 12:34 PM

You guys continue to impress me. Everything seems to be clean and simple and with purpose, just the way I like it. I think you should create a position in your company any allow me to fill it. I’m house broken, loving and a work-a-holic. A fine mix I think. I’ll await your offer letter. :)

Chris Kinsman

6/8/2010 12:51 PM

This is a great idea! Finally we can use something like Notables for Firefox on Safari. Thanks guys!

Jim Kalmbach

6/8/2010 1:54 PM

I teach web design at a university and I would use this extension constantly to provide students with feed back.

great idea!

This is sick!

Great! I could really use something like this as an iPad app. Possible?

This is an awesome tool for developers, and one for an audience that you most likely haven’t thought of…My mom. (Really ALL our moms) Understanding that everyone reading this is a standards compliant, fully optimized, and HTML5-enabled über-whiz…I see another really useful tool here for helping my 60+ mom or sister find EXACTLY what I want her to click on, and look at on a given web site. There’s a whole world of people out there who are less comfortable surfing or clicking (or even finding their way around an over-designed site) b/c of the “scary story they saw on 60 minutes about phishing scams.” This would offer them comfort, and me less time explaining which “Small icon in the top right corner” they should look at. FWIW

Benjamin A. Wendelboe

6/8/2010 11:21 PM

I love it..! Release it now, please!

6/9/2010 5:27 AM

I hope this can be built into Coda preview pane. That would be a nice addition when coding.
Any idea on a Coda update? Soon….ish? lol

Marin Todorov

6/9/2010 5:59 AM

I’m very proud of myself for owning Coda

Only one question ? WHEN IT WILL BE AVAILABLE ???????????????

Great extension. I now use Diigo.com for web annotations, so this embedded extension might be ever better.

Jon Brulloths

6/9/2010 3:27 PM

You guys are AWESOME!
I can’t wait for this ext. to become available – it will be extremely helpful for my group, particularly since we function as a ‘virtual’ office! This should make communications with my Publisher roughly 1M% easier!
:)
Thanks!

Bob Adler

6/10/2010 7:12 AM

Looks like an awesome tool! I use “mail contents of page” which seems so old school compared to this. Please email all us comments when its available!

Ian Tearle

6/10/2010 8:41 AM

Yet again another piece of absolutely stunning software from the Panic team! WOW! But I want it now!

Beautiful site, great extension!

When this extension will be released ? Our company just need something like this!

Russell Heistuman

6/10/2010 4:43 PM

Just sitting here twiddling my thumbs–since I can’t start scribbling notes all over Safari yet. Can’t wait.

Rob Whynot

6/11/2010 6:52 AM

Bravo guys, bravo!

Can’t wait!!

This rotation of the text makes me sick! Seriously, don’t rotate the text that is for reading. It really made me dizzy..

This idea looks fun.
Hey Panic, you’re not going to hijack our emails, right?

Simon Westerlund

6/15/2010 12:32 AM

Seriously! Release that thing! I do want it so much! I actually might pay for it.
And to you “jj”, just turn of your javascript if you don’t want the awesome rotate fx.

i want it NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Lots of Safari Extensions coming out. But Coda Notes seems more elaborate and useful than others to me. I’m guessing clients will love it too. Can’t wait for it to be available.

By the way, Apple is accepting submissions for their Safari Enxtensions Gallery:
http://www.the-constant.com/2010/06/apple-opens-safari-extensions-gallery-submissions/

Tom Arnfeld

6/17/2010 12:47 AM

THis is awesome! I’m exited :)

Another reason why I wish I could use my MBP @ work. Boo-freakin’-hoo. Looking forward to using it @ home though… and the next version of Coda; I gotta feeling it’s coming out soon.

Awesome! I just had the exact situation that you describe that you built this extension for, moments later found Coda Notes. Perfect. Now we have Safari 5… when are you releasing Code Notes? It’s awesome what you done here, can’t wait to try it.

I want it bad! :) Is it called Coda Notes because it’ll be a new feature of Coda?

Rick Roberts

6/20/2010 5:15 PM

When are you releasing?

Need beta testers?

Hoping this comes out soon. I second the idea of saving the changes locally and would also suggest an option to email those changes to another user so that we could collaboratively annotate web pages…

Really, really hope this comes out soon. I’ve got a project I could use this for TODAY.

Is the availability of this extension imminent?

Great idea, beautifully implemented. WANT!

I haven’t seen a response as to when this will be available? This is the best ever don’t be holding out?!? lol

7/2/2010 5:59 AM

J’attends aussi avec impatience.

7/3/2010 9:06 AM

So it’s been almost a month…was this just vaporware or do you have an actual extension to share with us?

Very cool, guys! The possibilities and benefits are already boggling my mind. Can’t wait!

Stoked, but anxious, please give us an update if you can!

Michael Wesley Stratton

7/9/2010 1:08 PM

Much better then Adobe Acrobate witch it comments sharing! Why u announce so early?! C’mon, we wont it now!!!

7/16/2010 9:47 AM

Is there a dedicated Code Notes website/download page?

Thanks,

is it on the (http://extensions.apple.com) gallery yet? i cant find it.

Dan Giralte

7/28/2010 7:07 AM

It is in the gallery under ‘Developer’ but I can’t seem to draw on a page yet

Dan Giralte

7/28/2010 7:10 AM

should have noted – saf 5.0.1 / win7 / x64

I can’t use this as a developer because screenshots get routed through Panic’s email servers. Can’t you just have it save the screenshot locally? And have an email option that sends the screenshot to my email client?

Floggy Bottom

7/28/2010 8:44 AM

Doesn’t work in Safari 5.0.1

I get the bar but clicking within the webpage doesn’t do anything.

Steve Iman

7/28/2010 11:50 AM

How great it would be if we could use this to annotate pages in Safari Reader!!! I’d pay plenty for that privelege;-)

Stephen Cox

7/28/2010 2:32 PM

Very slick. Since everyone in the office uses Safari (it help’s where a mac shop) we’ll use this. Thanks.

Walter Tyree

7/29/2010 5:09 AM

Sadly, it doesn’t work for me this morning (Safari 5.0.1). I can see the notes bar but can’t draw. I’m very excited to use it though and have been watching for it since the WWDC demo.

same here, got the bar but can not draw….

Jeremy Speer

7/29/2010 8:53 AM

This is freaking great. Doesn’t seem to work on all sites, but it works on the ones i’m responsible for. I’ve already annotated several pages and sent the screenshots to developers. Awesome stuf.

Walter Tyree

7/29/2010 9:39 AM

Update: after rebooting my computer it started to work! I’m so excited! I’m going to use this for a client meeting this afternoon. Thank you.

Hy, thanx for Coda Notes. However, I cannot use tools if the webpage is scrolled down, normal or bug ?

8/1/2010 8:23 AM

As always you guys hit it out of the park. Love Panic, use Panic, buy Panic, total win

Sam Spade

8/2/2010 2:03 AM

looks rad

not working (for me) in 5.0.1 after several reboots

Thanks, is amazing!!

It’s possible to permanently fix the Coda Notes bar?

Is it possible in the Safari Extensions API to mess with the cursor icon? (Heh.) Kind of hard to draw with a mouse when the cursor icon is an I-beam.

A crosshairs icon would be awesome when in draw mode. It would also give another context indicator (besides the active Coda Notes toolbar) that this isn’t Kansas anymore.

Perhaps throw an RFE at Apple for such an API addition?

Dale Hogan

8/4/2010 9:36 AM

This is a fantastic extension. Thanks so much!

Brad Price

8/4/2010 5:59 PM

Love love love the idea, but it seems to work very inconsistently. No other extensions installed, Safari 5.0.1. I can usually make it edit text, but the drawing tools not so much. Boo hoo hoo hoo!

Seeking enlightenment from fellow travelers.

This is simply huge!
But you should do also a Firefox version ASAP…

There seems to be some incompatibility with SEO QUAKE which kills Coda Notes.

“A crosshairs icon would be awesome when in draw mode.”
Yes!

Also, it appears that there is a vertical limit to the edit feature. I can’t edit beyond a certain number of pixels down a Web page.

this is great! love it! with the prevalence of laptops and trackpads.. and the apple magic trackpad, it would be great to be able to “write/draw” without having to click. then i could just use my finger on the trackpad to scribble. MUCH easier with a trackpad than having to click and scribble.. and, as you may know, writing/drawing with a mouse isn’t much easier..

this could easily be implemented by a toggle button in the coda notes menu that appears, or by using a modifier key on the keyboard.

otherwise, AWESOME!

Dale Aackerman

9/21/2010 5:58 PM

Just wanted to find out the plans are for Coda. I use Coda a lot but would love to see support for Ruby/Rails with hints/code completion. TextMate has stalled on producing new product so it might be an opportunity.

Great Product!!

Gareth Williams

11/17/2010 3:15 PM

I think this is a brilliant idea, but I would love to se it extended a little ore if possible, arrows, boxes I mean, if possible cut and move elements around the page! Now that would be cool! Love the work though guys, just thought I would try and help you to improve if thats possible.

Gareth Williams

11/17/2010 3:17 PM

Stupid me! You can do that with the scribbler! Sorry im stupid!!

Charles Earl

11/29/2010 9:01 PM

Found it to be a good tool. Is it possible to write extensions for it? I think it would be a nice to have integration with something like google wave in a box (http://www.waveprotocol.org/), or other social media for that matter.

Bob Melrose

2/23/2011 11:16 PM

Thank you, this is a really well executed tool. I use it all the time now for quick tech support to clients, showing them where to click around the page etc. its really quick. Well done!

3/11/2011 6:06 AM

More good stuff from Panic…but who would expect any less. Great useful tool!

it looked cool.
downloaded it.
doesn’t work even after i restarted safari, it only refreshed page. stupid

(ps. using safari 5.1, lion)

It doesn’t work with Safari 5.1, Lion.

Any updates for Safari 5.1.1?

doesn’t work with Safari 5.1.1 & Lion. only refreshes the page… :-(
will there be an update available?

Any word on when this might be updated?

OK. Correction to prior post. It works, but if you are using Single Processor pages, it does not. You must use a Multiple Processor page. (This is for those folks using the Debug menu and are using the Single Processor page to avoid Safari’s bizarre “sudden tab reload” bug)

Nice now.

The information this can be genuinely and also beneficial immediately after i do research. You merely attached your hair a guarenteed audience.

I use Safari 6 and when I click send button nothing happen. And I cannot use all types of notes (pen, hightlight, text and notes) on the same page. If I use pen, text doens’t work, if I use hightlight first, pen after that doesn’t work. Maybe I do something wrong?
I like your plugin very much. And look forward update :)
