My biggest issue with the Lightning HDMI output dongle is that gaming apps seem to suffer significant performance drops with display out enabled. Have a look at a pre-race sequence on Real Racing 3 with the dongle attached to the display, then quit the race and retry with the dongle out. It's a night and day difference in terms of frame-rate.

My guess is that there's not enough bandwidth to service two displays without a performance penalty - I see exactly the same thing with the Tegra 3 tablets I've tested. The same thing happens on the older 30-pin HDMI output too on both iPad 2 and iPad 3.

The only tablet I've tested that gives a full frame-rate on the HDMI output is the Surface RT, which uses standard Windows display options, allowing you to disable the tablet screen and pour all resources into the display output.

Maybe Anonymous Coward and his chums could address this in a future iOS update? An option to disable the tablet screen and divert all system resources to the HDMI output would be grand. Removing the dongle would "re-boot" the tablet display.

This is the perfect site for anyone who would like to understand this topic. You realize a whole lot its almost hard to argue with you (not that I personally would want to…HaHa). You certainly put a brand new spin on a subject that's been discussed for ages. Wonderful stuff, just great!

So basically, Apple stuffed an A4.5 (A4 CPU, A5 GPU) into a cable with a bunch of caps and resistors and charged $50 for it.

Lightning is 2 steps forward (reversible connector and software upgradable), but 2 steps back (kills compatibility with 30-pin ecosystem and probably bandwidth limited to something between USB2 and USB3).

From the teardown does someone know how many wires come out of the lightning side? I need to extend the length of the cord coming out of the adapter. I'm thinking of chopping off the connector and soldering on an extension.
