Let’s Help Japan

Panic — your favorite s-corp registered in the state of Oregon — is a neutral entity. It doesn’t support any political campaigns. It doesn’t denigrate your personal beliefs. With any luck, it will never land in controversy. Panic is here to make great software for you.

But, late last week, Panic suddenly found itself face-to-face with the sobering effects of living on a tiny, twirling planet with a wicked habit for pranks: a tremendous earthquake. A devastating tsunami. An unreal nuclear crisis. All hit Japan, where two of our finest Panic employees run our Japanese subsidiary, Panic (K.K.) Japan.

The reality of getting involved, finally, caught up with us.

Nobuhiro, who runs Panic Japan, packed up his wife and two kids in his home town of Kashiwa, and, after finding gas, drove them to Nagoya, far from the looming threat of a legitimate nuclear disaster. Kenichi, our icon genius, was, amazingly, right here in Portland when everything hit, and he watched it unfold stunned and disconnected: just the latest Bruckheimer production in a tiny streaming video window. He’s now on his way back to Nagoya. And while part of me wonders if he’s headed in the wrong direction, when he e-mailed me the latest ultrasound sent from his pregnant wife (it’s a boy!), I knew he was right.

It’s only a matter of time before this event fades to the back of our minds, before the Japanese people are once again running full speed ahead, before towns are slowly rebuilt, families are reunited, lost loved ones are mourned, lives are slowly restored to normal. I know that soon, Japan will be filled with the kinds of moments that have stuck with me from my travel: a quiet picnic in Shinjuku Park steps from the world’s busiest train station, crazy comical loudspeaker sales pitches in stores, a businesswoman delicately preparing a meal for six stray cats, the white gloves of a train conductor placing a shiny pocket-watch into a specially-cut hole in the center of a modern digital dashboard, a life-changing plate of curry in a restaurant that seats only four and is improbably wedged under a staircase, the roar of a rainstorm on a hundred-yen umbrella, a nation of people who, even on first meeting them, treat you like their oldest friends.

Even though what happened will never go away, Japan will, as they have before, go forward.

But the line between then and now is long. And we’ve got work to do.

You might be sick of it — being told to donate to a charity. If you’re like me, donating to a charity is an abstract, disconnected affair. So, we thought we’d make it a little more tangible, allowing you to help Japan directly while getting Panic software with one swift click.

Panic will donate 100% of today’s proceeds directly to the Japanese relief effort.

It doesn’t matter if you buy direct from us or via the Mac App Store, we’ll take care of it. We’ll total up sales from 10:00 AM PST Mar 17th to 10:00 AM PST Mar 18th. And we plan to donate to a mix of the Japanese Red Cross Society and Portland’s own Mercy Corps.

It’s a drop in the bucket, but this is our family. Thanks in advance for your purchases and, in turn, your donations.

Japan — and Panic Japan — hang in there. We’re here for you. You can do this. I hope to see you soon.

Bless you.

That was a beautifully written piece, and very affecting. I’ve already bought all the software I need (and use nearly every day!) from Panic, but you prompted me to make a donation to the Red Cross directly. Thank you.

You guys do great work every day, this only makes every time I use your software even more fulfilling. I already have all your software, so I donated to the Red Cross.

Thank you for doing this. Like the others, I’ve already purchased your big 3 and use them every day. This is great though; just another reason why you’re one of the best tech companies ever. Period. I’m also glad to hear that Nagoya is a safe zone – I lived there for 2 years. Thanks again!

Very convincing. Superbly written. Heading to your store right now.

Another reason to purchase Panic’s excellent products. Thank you for doing this for the Japan relief efforts.

Done.

I’m a long-time Transmit user, but I’ve always been on the fence about Coda. Tried it a few times, but I’m so entrenched in my outdated development methods I’ve never pulled the trigger.

But I’ve just bought it. Even if I never use (although I suspect I will), it’s a great thing Panic is doing and I want to support the cause.

Peace out.

Awesome words and deeds here. Off to the store…

If I hadn’t purchased Coda and Transmit already, I think I’d be compelled to do it right now. Thanks for being really nice people.

Like other posters, I’ve been circling Coda for a while – your selfless offer tipped the scales and I finally bit. Thank you for doing this, it makes me proud to support your products.

Just picked up Coda. Thanks guys.

Just picked up Transmit after really enjoying using Coda. I really appreciate your efforts in helping Japan!

Buying Coda. Again.

Great idea! I was on the fence about buying Transmit. Now that’s settled.

Thanks for the gesture – I’ll be buying from the App Store when I return from work tonight.

For whatever reason, I hadn’t gotten around to ordering the Transmit 4 upgrade. Now the reason is clear and the upgrade purchased. The power of procrastination is perpetually proven!

Had to get Coda. I already have multiple good dev solutions, but this sort of gesture deserves support. What a classy thing to do.

Real great that you guys are doing this, just bought coda from the appstore. money’s a little tight but still needed todo both. killing 2 birds with one stone as they say.

Finally got around buying Transmit.
Absolutely awesome effort from you!

Excellent!

(I’ve also already purchased the three big apps, but I’m posting this around for indecisive friends…)

Does this apply to t-shirts and such as well? I’ve already purchased all of the software! :)

Thanks Cabel!

Count one more enthusiastic Transmit user who was on the fence with Coda, but went ahead and bought it today.

Add me to the list of new Coda owners. This is an amazing thing you guys are doing.

You guys gave me back my believe in humanity, you also gave me back tears in my eyes and warmed up my heart. Thank you so much! Just bought CODA. Yesterday I thought about it but your today’s offer I couldn’t resist. To get an amazing piece of software and to help the Japanese people in one step is the best thing I have done for a long time. Keep up your good work and most of all let the Japanese people win their fight against the nuclear danger. In deep respect to “The 50 of Fukushima”.

Bought Transmit today.

I’ve been looking for a good way to donate to Japanese relief effort via PayPal, to also get Panic software was a more than pleasant bonus. While I already own Coda consider me a proud purchaser of Transmit.
Thank you.

I have wanted to give up Dreamweaver for months in favor of Coda. You have now given me the perfect reason to do so. Thank-you for this opportunity to support others in extreme need. May God Bless your company and your team in Japan.

Bought Coda…You are the classiest bunch of geeks whose software I use.

Awesome stuff guys. I hope this idea becomes viral and everyone follows.

Coda user, Transmit 3 user… now Transmit 4 user. Your generosity is admirable, as is your software. XO

THANK YOU!!! As a Japanese living in U.S. and watching what’s happening in Japan is very hard. Keep up with developing great products that centers UX experience.

I’d been thinking about buying Coda for a while — this post sealed the deal.
Guys, thank you. You are awesome.

I’m a bit short on money right now, but this post won me over and after wanting Coda for a while, just purchased it. What a great way to donate to the Japanese relief effort. You’re awesome!

Thanks for doing this. I purchased Transmit.

Already own Transmit, Coda & Unison, so I will donate direct to Red Cross. So much respect to you guys.

Saw this on daringfireball. Cabel — this is awesome. Been curious about Coda for a bit and there’s def no excuse not to buy now. Thank you. Best wishes and hopes to your Panic Japan team.

Scott, re: buying Panic non-digital goods–Yes, I asked Cabel on Twitter and he indeed confirmed that anything counts, including shirts. I got the awesome Transmit 4 Nixon shirt.

Err…Neven. Not Cabel. Anyway, *Panic* said that Panic Goods count. :)

You are classy. Don’t think I need Coda, but I don’t see how I can turn your offer down. Thank you.

Always admired you guys but am not a developer that could find a use for your ‘wares, just a Mac loving college student. People like you are the reason Macs are better. Period.
Anyway, never had a real need for any of your apps but I’m going to grab some tonight. You guys are unreal.

Just purchased Transmit & CandyBar.

To Japan and Panic Japan, be strong, we are with you.

And to Panic, Inc., thanks for being awesome. :)

Been looking for a good FTP app and saw your blog. Gonna buy Transmit to help! Thanks for this!

Bestrong Japan!!! We love you and beside you forever….

Wonderful generosity – just purchased Transmit from the App Store!

Thanks Panic – you have helped make the world a nicer and better place today…

Wow, just buyed Coda! Thank you for this great idea!

I came to the blog right after the EQ, I wondered how Panic Japan was doing. Such good news to hear your ‘family’ is safe and sound. I already own Transmit, but will have to check out Coda now!

I was tempted to upgrade to Transmit 4 since a couple of months. Now, the upgrade is done and I feel good.

Great initiative guys.

Small afterquake hit now. My friends, family, coworkers, and everyone has fears of nuclear crisis and wide area power outages even in Tokyo. But there’s no night which isn’t followed by dawn. As one of Japanese web designer and developer, I want to say thank you to Panic and all people helped us. Love.

As one of the Japanese, I want to acknowledge the support.
Cabel, Panic and the people around the world I appreciate your help.
皆さんのご厚意に感謝いたします。

wow, great idea

3 days left to my Transmit trial, let’s buy it now!

Taking this opportunity to grab some software for my loved ones.

Been wondering about Coda for far too long. Now bought it. Thank you for such a generous spirit

Finally decided to buy Coda and recommend that everyone does the same. Still one hour to go!

I am a long time fan of Panic and Cabel. I go way back, like before Audion, I think. I can’t remember any developer and company with better support, products and people. This gesture does not surprise me and reinforces my belief in them. I own Transmit and Coda and use them constantly in my work. I can’t afford much but I am going to purchase another license of Coda at the App store…just because. It’s a way to help, although small, in the relief efforts as well as to be able to comment at the App store about the company and Coda, itself. I know I can trust that 100% of the proceeds will go to support Japan. Well done, Panic. Looking forward to more from you all in the future.
Carole Carter

Really struck by your gesture, decided to buy Desktastic and Transmit.

Beautifully written. My wife lived in Japan for quite a while, and has many close friends there, and it’s heart warming to see the outpouring of support. Thank you.

If I didn’t already own all your software I would buy something. Fortunately you aren’t the only small Mac software developers providing proceeds to Japan, so I have picked up a bunch of software the last few days.

what a great way to help these people
There are also many other ways to help them.
Even lady gaga had a great idea

Brilliant in every possible way. Thank you for caring.

I spent 13 years on Tokyo and still maintain a home there which my mother-in-law is taking care of for us. Lucky enough to be in Hong Kong when the earthquake hit, but on my way back to Tokyo tomorrow to do what I can for family and friends.

I’ve come close to buying your products in the past but just never pulled the trigger. I missed the donation window, but I’m buying anyway. Thank you.

Could you prolong it?

Thank you Mr. Sasser and team! I shared the following with my friends on Facebook.

“Panic Software announced they would donate 100% of a day’s proceeds to relief efforts in Japan. I own their software so I decided to buy a Transmit license for the first to retweet my offer. Brie, from Vietnam, was the first so she got copy of the best FTP app. $34 goes to Japan. Panic’s blog post is touching. I thank them for their inspiring generosity. Connections made. People helped. It’s a small world after all.”

Thanks for doing this!!!

Hello, this is Nobuhiro at Panic Japan K.K.

I’m reading all your comments!
Thank you so much for your praying, donating and supporting.

We returned to Kashiwa-shi last Saturday after having received iPad 2 from Kenichi.
Japan office also opened from this Tuesday!

The inconvenience of the radiological threat, the power failure and aftershocks continue.

However, daily life is recovering day by day in Kanto area (is surrounding area of Tokyo).
And, everybody is working to recover daily life of Japan!

I was so utterly late reading this. But I just wanted to add that you guys are beyond amazing, the post literally got me close to crying. This pure and selfless act is beautiful beyond description.

Hi Panic,
I’ve been working in Kesenuma and Rikuzentakata (northern Japan) for the past month+ with a team of friends from Philadelphia doing relief work as volunteers assisting in the rebuilding efforts.

As a former Panic beta tester, and proud PPU (Panic Product User), I’d just like to say thank you for your efforts to aid the relief efforts over here. Panic is, without a doubt, a team of amazing folks.

Namaste,
D
